Noah D - Drum n Bass Arena {September 2008}

Noah D (Noah Dickinson) started his musical career as a singer/songwriter playing multiple different instruments from guitar to didgeridoo to hand percussion and many others in between. He was first introduced to drum & bass in 1998 via the sounds of Boymerang and Photek, but didn't delve fully into the genre until 2001. Now the name Noah D is quickly becoming "one to watch" after his tunes have smashed dance floors across the globe including such prestigious UK events as the Metalheadz monthly, Hardware at The End, Therapy Sessions at Herbal and the biggest dubstep events DMZ and FWD. Deadbeat - Roots And Wire {2008}

Though based in Montreal, Deadbeat and his ultra-textured ambient dub soundscapes made their way around the world, finding large audiences in Europe as well as in North America.
Deadbeat producer Scott Monteith is a member of the same fertile Montreal scene that includes such luminaries as Akufen (Marc Leclair) and Algorithm (Jeff Milligan). Like his peers, he gained international acclaim in the early 2000s once the French-Canadian city became a hot spot for laptop techno (see the Montreal Smoked Meat compilation), thanks partly to the world-reknown Mutek festival as well as a wealth of Montreal-based record labels. Monteith debuted as Deadbeat in July 2000 with the Cesium Beam 12” for Hautec Records and has since recorded for such labels as Revolver, Intr_version, Background, Force Inc., ORAL, Scape, Cynosure, and Clitekture. In addition, he has collaborated with Steve Beaupre as Crackhaus and also with Robert Henke (Monolake) as Atlantic Waves.
2001 fellow Montreal producer Mitchell Akiyama released the debut Deadbeat full-length, Primordia (2001), on his Intr_version label, and another year later Stefan Betke (Pole) released the follow-up, Wild Life Documentaries (2002), on his Scape label.
In addition to his recordings, Monteith has performed live at the Mutek festival (Montreal, May 2000), the Transmediale festival (Berlin, February 2002), and the Creative Time festival (New York, October 2002), as well as elsewhere. By day he works for the Montreal-based audio software company Applied Acoustics Systems.

The Gaslamp Killer or The GLK is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs. Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself the Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), It’s a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009), and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records. Kočani Orkestar

Kočani Orkestar comes from the city of Kočani (Кочани), in The Republic of Macedonia (view more: Balkan Folk Music). Performed by two trumpets, three tubas, saxophone, clarinet, zurla (traditional oboe), accordion and percussion, their style of music is aptly described in their region as Romska Orientalna Musika - ‘Rom’ meaning ‘gypsy’. It is a potent mixture of powerful brass band sounds, Turkish/Bulgarian rhythms (including characteristic asymetrical time signatures such as 7/8, 9/8 etc., which are sometimes called ‘Aksak’ in traditional Turkish music), and Eastern-style solos which are at the same time very skillful, inspired and wild.

Cheb i Sabbah (formerly known as DJ Cheb i Sabbah), born Haim Sérge El Baaz in Constantine, Algeria, is a club DJ.
He moved to Paris in the 1960s, and, more or less by accident, became a DJ. His complex cultural background may have prompted him to mix musical styles. By the late 1980s, he was pushing boundaries on the dance floor, seeking ways to work African, Asian, and Arabic music into the mix. Then, as the world music movement unfolded, Cheb i Sabbah began recording traditional and classical musicians himself and used those tracks to create new works — effectively, music composed by a DJ.
Having completed four recordings, Sabbah recently returned to his native North Africa to gather the raw material for his most ambitious project to date, La Kahena, a set of eight pieces created from music by eight different acts, all featuring women singers.
Sabbah was nominated for the BBC's 2006 Award for World Music in the Club Global category.

Asa Chang & Junray - Tabla bol

Asa Chang & Junray is the band of the Japanese percussionist Asa Chang, who was the founder and original bandmaster of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. After leaving that group in 1993, he formed Asa Chang & Junray in 1998 with programmer and guitarist Hidehiko Urayama. They were joined in 2000 by tabla player U-zhaan. Live, the group use a portable soundsystem called 'Jun-Ray Tronics', hence the name — although the word 'junray' also means 'pilgrimage'.

In 2002, the British label The Leaf Label released Jun Ray Song Chang, which compiled the group's first two, Japan-only albums. It was followed a year later by the mini album, Tsu Gi Ne Pu. The group's song 'Hana' was featured on Fabric Live 07, while 'Tsu Gi Ne Pu' was included on a The Wire Tapper CD. The group's 2005 album, Minna no Junray, featured vocals by singer and actress Kyōko Koizumi. It has not been released overseas.

Deltron 3030 is a supergroup of hip-hop artists, composed primarily of producer Dan the Automator, rapper Del tha Funkee Homosapien and DJ Kid Koala, though their work features many other artists as well, all taking on various futuristic pseudonyms. Their debut CD Deltron 3030 is a concept album set in the year 3030 that tells of Del’s alter ego Deltron Zero’s fight against huge corporations that rule the universe. The lyrics are characterized by extravagant allusions to futuristic outer-space cliches and astronomy.

Menomena - Friend And Foe {2007}

Menomena are an experimental rock band from Portland, Oregon, made up of Brent Knopf on guitar, keyboards, glockenspiel; Justin Harris on bass, guitar, baritone sax and alto sax; and Danny Seim on percussion. All members of the band share singing duties.
The band formed in late 2000, when Knopf graduated from Dartmouth College and returned to Portland to collaborate with Harris and Seim. They played their first show in July 2001, at The Meow Meow, a now-defunct all ages venue in Portland.


They self-released their debut album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, on May 20, 2003. The album was elaborately packaged in an 80-page flipbook that Seim designed and individually hand-assembled. It later received nationwide distribution through FILMguerrero in 2004. The title is an anagram for The First Menomena Album.


In 2005, Under an Hour was released as a three-track album of instrumental music written for and performed with Monster Squad, an experimental dance company based in Portland.

In August of 2006, Menomena signed with Barsuk Records although the band still maintains a relationship with their old label, FILMguerrero. It was stated that FILMguerrero would still be involved in their old catalog and future vinyl releases.

Menomena released their next album in 2007, titled Friend and Foe. It received relative critical acclaim — while some websites like Pitchfork Media praised the album for its effective modular pop, others like PopMatters criticized it for presenting a sense of feigned maturity. Their record release show was held in their home town of Portland, Oregon. The packaging was designed by Knopf and features artwork by graphic novelist/cartoonist Craig Thompson, consisting of die-cut shapes, decoder rings, and hidden messages. It was nominated for “Best Recording Package” at The Grammy Awards.

Boris Kovac(1955) is a composer, instrumentalist and multimedia artist from Vojvodina, the Pannonian part of Yugoslavia. He writes music for chamber groups he rehearses and leads. Many of his projects are to some extent connected with theatre. From 1989 he has been the leader of the Chamber Theatre of Music OGLEDALO from Novi Sad. During the period from 1991-1995 he mainly lived and worked in Italy, Slovenia and Austria. In 1996 he moves back to Yugoslavia. By leading his RITUAL NOVA ensemble, LaDaABa orchest, La Campanella orchestra, Chamber Theatre of Music OGLEDALO, Academy of Fine Skills and working with students he is also trying to reestablish the contemporary music/theatre scene in his country.
He has performed his works in a few hundred concerts and more the 200 festivals of new music and contemporary theater in around 30 countries on 4 continents.

Dreadzone - Sound {2001}

Dreadzone is a british band whose music is an eclectic fusion of dub, reggae, dance, and folk. They have so far produced four studio albums and one live album.

Dreadzone formed in 1993 when ex-Big Audio Dynamite drummer Greg Roberts teamed up with Tim Bran, who had previously worked as a musician and sound engineer for Julian Cope. The name ‘Dreadzone’ was suggested to Greg and Tim by Don Letts.

Tim and Greg were soon joined by bassist Leo Williams, also formerly of Big Audio Dynamite. The band signed to Creation Records in 1993 and released their first album 360°. The following year the band signed to Virgin Records and released their second studio album Second Light. In the meantime, Dreadzone had become a favourite festival act and in June that year played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

John Peel championed Dreadzone on Radio 1, and cited Second Light as one of his favourite albums of all time. Tracks from Second Light also dominated Peel’s Festive Fifty in 1995, and the band recorded six Peel Sessions between 1993 and 2001.

Between 1998 and 2001 the Dreadzone Soundsystem hosted the popular Dubwiser club night at Notting Hill Arts Club.

Dreadzone recently performed at the 2005 Bestival music festival held yearly on the Isle of Wight, however they also regularly tour the United Kingdom playing smaller venues.

Matisyahu - Shake Off the Dust...Arise {2004}

Matisyahu (born Matthew Paul Miller, June 30, 1979) is an American reggae musician.
Known for blending traditional Jewish themes with reggae, rock and hip hop sounds, Matisyahu is most recognizable for being an orthodox Jew. Through his short career, Matisyahu has teamed up with some of the biggest names in reggae production including Bill Laswell and duo Sly & Robbie.
Since his debut, Matisyahu has received positive reviews from both rock and reggae outlets. Most recently, he was named Top Reggae Artist of 2006 by Billboard as well as being named a spokesperson for Kenneth Cole.

"Continuing to perform, Matisyahu assembled a backing band consisting of guitarist Aaron Dugan, bassist Josh Werner, and drummer Jonah David. The group recorded Shake Off the Dust...Arise, which was released by JDub Records in 2004. While touring in support of the album, Matisyahu recorded one of his February 2005 concerts and released the material as Live at Stubb's, which was issued in April courtesy of Or Music before getting picked up for national distribution by Epic Records. Epic reissued it on August 23, 2005, as Matisyahu toured around the country and prepared a second studio album with producer Bill Laswell. The final product, Youth, appeared in March 2006 and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Reggae Album. A simultaneously released dub version of the album was made available to mail-order customers.
Meanwhile, Matisyahu's backing musicians chose to release additional material on their own, adopting the name Roots Tonic for the side project. Roots Tonic Meets Bill Laswell marked the group's debut in May 2006, and by the end of the year the EP/DVD combo No Place to Be was also released. Jonah David dropped out of the band in June 2007, however, and Roots Tonic effectively disbanded, despite the enlistment of replacement drummer Skoota Warner. Amon Adonai Santos de Araújo Tobin (born 7 February 1972), better known as Amon Tobin , is a Brazilian electronic musician and DJ. He is best known for his use of sampling. Tobin is also credited with helping to create the emerging "trip hop" genre in the late 1990s. He has released seven major studio albums since 1996 under the London-based Ninja Tune record label where he is considered one of their most successful artists.

In 2005, he created the musical score to Ubisoft's critically acclaimed and successful video game Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. He is also noted for his entirely field-recorded album Foley Room, released in 2007. His music has been used in numerous major motion pictures including The Italian Job and 21. Tobin has created songs for several independent films, including the 2006 Hungarian film Taxidermia.

Kudsi Erguner {Ney}

Turkish Ney




Kudsi Erguner, born in the 1950s in Istanbul, Turkey, is considered a master of traditional Mevlevi Sufi and is one of the best-known players of the Turkish ney flute. As a boy, Kudsi and his father Ulvi Erguner performed hypnotic and spiritual dance rituals from the Mevlevi-Sufi tradition at Dervish ceremonies. For several decades now, he has researched into the earliest roots of Ottoman music which he has also taught, performed and recorded. In 1975, Kudsi Erguner moved to Paris where, at the beginning of the 1980s, he founded the Mevlana Institute devoted to the study and teaching of classical Sufi music. Years later, highly occupied by his musical works accordingly due to lack of time, he had to give up managing the institute . Together with the “Kudsi Erguner Ensemble” he developed deep insights into the diversity of his culture: the group conveys both authentic, often improvised forms of expression of classical Ottoman performance culture as well as a comprehensive repertoire of modern and classical pieces that can be traced back to the thirteenth century. In addition to his own recordings, Erguner has performed with Peter Gabriel, Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook, George Aperghis, Didier Lockwood, and Michel Portal. Kudsi’s brother Suleyman Erguner, is also Turkey’s one of the leading ney flute performers and Sufi music composers who used to perform with Kudsi Erguner.
