Zenzile - Modus Vivendi {2005}

Zenzile is a slap in the face to all the bad things that are happening around the world. They have assumed it their responsibility to get into any field where they feel that their human fellows are persecuted. They are against the politics and politicians who have no regard for human rights and the lives of their fellow people.

Since reggae has assumed the role of peace music, Zenzile has gathered itself under the most appropriate banner to launch their offensive against the world that forgets about its obligations. They are particularly critical of the areas where people can make a difference but they are not doing it because of their own vested interest, rather for the rights and quality of life of every human being.

This music is the soundtrack for every middle class struggler who just wants to live in perfect harmony with his or her environment.

Dreadzone - Sound {2001}

Dreadzone is a band whose music is an eclectic fusion of , , , and . They have so far produced four studio albums and one live album.

Dreadzone formed in 1993 when ex-Big Audio Dynamite drummer Greg Roberts teamed up with Tim Bran, who had previously worked as a musician and sound engineer for Julian Cope. The name ‘Dreadzone’ was suggested to Greg and Tim by Don Letts.

Tim and Greg were soon joined by bassist Leo Williams, also formerly of Big Audio Dynamite. The band signed to Creation Records in 1993 and released their first album 360°. The following year the band signed to Virgin Records and released their second studio album Second Light. In the meantime, Dreadzone had become a favourite festival act and in June that year played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

John Peel championed Dreadzone on Radio 1, and cited Second Light as one of his favourite albums of all time. Tracks from Second Light also dominated Peel’s Festive Fifty in 1995, and the band recorded six Peel Sessions between 1993 and 2001.

Between 1998 and 2001 the Dreadzone Soundsystem hosted the popular Dubwiser club night at Notting Hill Arts Club.

Dreadzone recently performed at the 2005 Bestival music festival held yearly on the Isle of Wight, however they also regularly tour the United Kingdom playing smaller venues.

Matisyahu - Shake Off the Dust...Arise {2004}

Matisyahu (born Matthew Paul Miller, June 30, 1979) is an American musician.
Known for blending traditional Jewish themes with , and sounds, Matisyahu is most recognizable for being an orthodox Jew. Through his short career, Matisyahu has teamed up with some of the biggest names in production including Bill Laswell and duo Sly & Robbie.
Since his debut, Matisyahu has received positive reviews from both and outlets. Most recently, he was named Top Reggae Artist of 2006 by Billboard as well as being named a spokesperson for Kenneth Cole.

"Continuing to perform, Matisyahu assembled a backing band consisting of guitarist Aaron Dugan, bassist Josh Werner, and drummer Jonah David. The group recorded Shake Off the Dust...Arise, which was released by JDub Records in 2004. While touring in support of the album, Matisyahu recorded one of his February 2005 concerts and released the material as Live at Stubb's, which was issued in April courtesy of Or Music before getting picked up for national distribution by Epic Records. Epic reissued it on August 23, 2005, as Matisyahu toured around the country and prepared a second studio album with producer Bill Laswell. The final product, Youth, appeared in March 2006 and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Reggae Album. A simultaneously released dub version of the album was made available to mail-order customers.
Meanwhile, Matisyahu's backing musicians chose to release additional material on their own, adopting the name Roots Tonic for the side project. Roots Tonic Meets Bill Laswell marked the group's debut in May 2006, and by the end of the year the EP/DVD combo No Place to Be was also released. Jonah David dropped out of the band in June 2007, however, and Roots Tonic effectively disbanded, despite the enlistment of replacement drummer Skoota Warner. The entire group (sans David) turned its focus back to Matisyahu instead, and Lights marked the singer's third LP upon its release in August 2009." ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Kudsi Erguner {Ney}

Turkish Ney

Kudsi Erguner
, born in the 1950s in Istanbul, Turkey, is considered a master of traditional Mevlevi Sufi and is one of the best-known players of the Turkish ney flute. As a boy, Kudsi and his father Ulvi Erguner performed hypnotic and spiritual dance rituals from the Mevlevi-Sufi tradition at Dervish ceremonies. For several decades now, he has researched into the earliest roots of Ottoman music which he has also taught, performed and recorded. In 1975, Kudsi Erguner moved to Paris where, at the beginning of the 1980s, he founded the Mevlana Institute devoted to the study and teaching of classical Sufi music. Years later, highly occupied by his musical works accordingly due to lack of time, he had to give up managing the institute . Together with the “Kudsi Erguner Ensemble” he developed deep insights into the diversity of his culture: the group conveys both authentic, often improvised forms of expression of classical Ottoman performance culture as well as a comprehensive repertoire of modern and classical pieces that can be traced back to the thirteenth century. In addition to his own recordings, Erguner has performed with Peter Gabriel, Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook, George Aperghis, Didier Lockwood, and Michel Portal. Kudsi’s brother Suleyman Erguner, is also Turkey’s one of the leading ney flute performers and Sufi music composers who used to perform with Kudsi Erguner.

High Tone - Dub Invaders {2009}

There’s once again some good news for those who have been following the many projects of the Lyon dub crew High Tone. Just a few months after “Dub Box” (the refix album), the irreverent heirs of Lee Scratch Perry now have released Dub Invaders.

It’s a simple concept. The five musicians of the band plus their vj have produced two titles each. The twelve songs are released on triple vinyl on the Jarring Effects label. Ranging from steppa to electrodub to dubstep, this album shows once again why High Tone is still considered as one of the major actors in the french dub scene. This is once again some great mutant dub.

Themselves - Crownsdown [anticon 2009]

themselves are Dose One and Jel, from California.

Jel became familiar with dose through his good friend and radio partner, Kevin Beacham. But it wasn’t until early 1998 when some tapes were exchanged through mutual friend, Mr. Dibbs, that the two realized their potential together. Soon after a few phone conversations, jel started making frequent sojourns from Chicago to Cincinnati to record with dose. The duo’s first couple of tracks ended up on dose’s first, self-released record Hemispheres (1998). Then from April of 1998 to January of 1999 they solidified their chemistry, putting the tracks together that would end up on themselves’ Them. That same Spring dose and jel, along with Slug of Atmosphere and Sole and Alias of Live Poets began recording Deep Puddle Dynamics’s The Taste Of Rain… Why Kneel. Out of that record, the concept of Anticon was somewhere born — whose founding dose and jel would become an integral part of, later bringing them both to the Bay Area.

Since then, both artists have continued to push boundaries, producing and collaborating on a range of work far outside the constructs of traditional genre forms. They’ve expanded their use and understanding of their equipment, as well as perfected their live performances. Their record, the no music. (2002), involved the use of: an SP-1200, an MPC-2000, a Korg Poly 64 keyboard, some other shit, a Roland VS 880, Digital Performer, a Dr. Sample, various microphones, numerous household items and found objects and sounds. Recently the two of them have also expanded their roles in the group, both contributing vocals and production to the no music.. They also added Dax Pierson on keyboards, Dr. Sample, Theremin and back up vocals on many of their tracks, and to all of their live performances. Dax is essential in adding syncopation and a real time quality to the tracks.

Brain Damage - Short Cuts {2008}

THE EMO-DUB BRAIN DAMAGE

Brain Damage is a dub duo bass-machine. It was created in 1999 by two founder-members of the Bangarang dub collective from Saint-Etienne (France) and the dub band A.S.S.E (Another Sound System Experience).
The duo plays and belongs to an electro dub style of its own. In the same time dark and emotional. A style defines like emo-dub-ambient.

After a first maxi CD -Bipolar Disorder- and a compilation -Combat dub- produced by its own label (Bangarang), Brain Damage realized 2 albums with the dub label from Paris, Hammerbass. It results from the first one another compilation under the name Combat dub vol.2, remixed versions of the tracks by the main activists of the international dub scene such as Zion Train, Alpha & Omega, Vibronics, The Disciples

In 2006, the duo signed at the label Jarring Effects and produced a third album : Spoken Dub Manifesto. Spoken Dub Manifesto is an ambitious piece of work, recorded with none the less than eleven vocalists, gathered here around a spoken word concept, confirming the emotional and special way that Brain Damage has to produce dub, hereafter unique.
More than ever the duo affirms its identity trough its choices, sometimes drastic, of concepts, collaborations, mixes or masterings.

After more than 300 concerts in Europe, it is interesting to notice that everything seems to oppose the ambient and “brainy” aspect of the studio work and the live performances, where sensations become physical again, sub basses tangible and the fight against the straightness of the machines merciless.

Analogik - Klunserbeats Live {2008}

Denmarks second capital Aarhus harboured their first two short playing EPs (released exclusively on 10 vinyl by Auditory Designs) and was a well-kept secret amongst DJs and nu jazz connoisseurs. By now the city once again lays ground to their fables from the World Seas. Analogik has settled as a quartet and invited additional guests for this first full cycle.

Due to the foursomes different backgrounds, their music isnt easily categorised. Asger Strandby is on turntables with scratchnefx and armed with a laptop, he also triggers diminutive electronic beats; Jesper Kobberøs charming guitar melodies is backed up by his flute and air organ; Theis Bror blows a precise and relaxed saxophone; Magnus Damgaards bassline is powerful and thick as hell just like his aged beard. Jazz is what brought them together as a band in 2004 but their music reflects on so much more: Dub, electronica, funk, bossa nova and tango is the carefully welted sounds from the Global Village.

EZ3kiel - Barb4ry (2003)

Founded in 1994, EZ3kiel is a magnet-Dub band originating from Tours, France. In the beginning they had a singer, but there is no recorded material from that period.
From 1999 they work as a trio:

Yann Nguema (bass guitar, visuals)
Joan Guillon (samples, effects, keyboard)
Matthieu Fays (percussion)

In 1999 they released a promising mini album ‘Equalize-it’. In 2000 they released an album called ‘Handle with care’ (Jarring Effects/Pias), which was full of collaborations with big names of the French independent scene (Yann Tiersen, Sylvestre from Dit Terzi and Sir Jean from Meï Teï Sho). That album intrigued the audience and confirmed the band’s eclectic style. During their live performances, they are known for creating a poetic universe with beautiful visuals and graphics, which are made by bass guitarist Yann N’Guema. He uses samples of various photographs, which in combination with the music creates a special audio-visual experience. Other French electro bands use visuals on their live performance, but EZ3kiel are really something special compared to them, their visuals are synchronized with the sound. In 2003 they released another album ‘Barb4Ry’ (Jarring Effects/Pias) which showed that the band’s mature period came. With it they confirmed their identity as a group which expresses itself in different music genres (electronica, dub, hiphop etc.) and does lots of experimentation. In their music beauty and melancholic mood quickly change to aggression and cruelty. The efficiency of EZ3kiel lies in their ability to surprise the audience. The profanity of their sound and visuals delivered them to become one of the most exciting and interesting French electro dub bands.
Their concert ambience can be seen on their live dvd, ‘Versus Tour 2004’. They took the name EZ3kiel from a biblical person which is often mentioned in Quentin Tarantino’s movie called Pulp Fiction (the character played by Samuel Jackson often reads his quotes).

Squarepusher - Numbers Lucent (2009)

Born in 1975 (Essex, England), Tom “Squarepusher” Jenkinson can be broadly described as an electronic musician, though he is perhaps best known for his experimental with a heavy influence. Rising from near-total obscurity to drum’n’bass cause célèbre in the space of a couple of months, Jenkinson released only a pair of EPs and a DJ Food remix for the latter’s Refried Food series before securing EP and LP release plans with three different labels. His first full-length work, Feed Me Weird Things (on Richard “Aphex Twin” James’ Rephlex label), was a dizzying, quixotic blend of superfast jungle breaks with Aphex-style synth textures, goofy, offbeat melodies, and instrumental arrangements (Jenkinson samples his own playing for his tracks) that recall vaguely pioneers such as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report. A skilled bassist and multi-instrumentalist, Jenkinson’s fretless accompaniment is a staple of his music and one of the more obvious affiliations with jazz (although his formal arrangements are often as jazz-derived as his playing).
More recently, in 2008 Squarepusher released “Just A Souvenir”, an album with a more rock-influenced sound, followed in 2009 by “Solo Electric Bass”, consisting of live recordings of Jenkinson on the titular instrument.
